Using merge variables in your landing pages and emails helps to boost engagement with leads through a more personalized message. This article will detail the best practices when using merge variables.
The following user roles can add merge variables:
- Marketing Manager
Inserting via Landing Page Designer
You can add merge variables from the text menu options in the landing page designer. To add merge variables, do the following:
Step One: In the top toolbar of SharpSpring, hover over Pages.
Step Two: In the drop-down menu that appears, select Landing Pages.
Step Three: Create or edit a landing page.
Step Four: In the landing page inline editor, place the cursor where you want the variable to go.
Step Five: In the top toolbar of the landing page inline editor, click the >_ button from the text menu options.
Step Six: In the drop-down menu that appears, select the variable you wish to use.
The selected variable will be placed where your mouse currently is. In the following image, the first name merge variable is used. The tracked lead’s first name will appear live as a result.
Inserting via Email Designer
You can insert merge variables using the email designer's inline editor. To insert merge variables in an email, do the following:
Step One: In the top toolbar of SharpSpring, hover over Content.
Step Two: In the drop-down menu that appears, select Emails.
Step Three: Create or edit an email.

Step Four: Double-click the content block or click the icon to open the inline editor.
Step Five: Place the cursor where you want the variable to go.
Step Six: In the editor toolbar, click the Merge drop-down button.
Step Seven: In the drop-down menu that appears, select the type of merge variable.
Step Eight: After you select a merge variable, a pop-up box will appear.
Step Nine: Add in the necessary variables.
Step Ten: On the right side of the email page, click Save.
