Conditional Form Fields

When building a form, you have the ability to add conditional fields.

This allows for one or more additional fields to be displayed based upon input(s) the lead enters when filling out the form. That way, you can gain additional information from your lead when it’s relevant. 

This article will detail how to add conditional fields to your form.

Requirements when creating conditional fields

Before creating conditional fields, keep the following in mind:

  • Before a conditional rule can be created, two or more fields must be added to the form and the form must be saved.
  • Only Standard and Custom fields can be conditional. Elements, Referral Fields, and Special Fields cannot be conditional.
  • A conditional field cannot be added to the Progressive Fields section, and progressive fields cannot be made conditional.
  • If the Field can only accept certain inputs, like a dropdown or radio field, then conditional logic can only be based on the available inputs.
  • If the Field does not have limited inputs, then the conditional logic is based on a single case-insensitive match.
  • A field that is conditionally shown can also define conditions to show a field.
  • A field that is displayed conditionally cannot be deleted from the form until the condition has been removed.


Conditional field types and operators

Depending on the type of field you select as conditional (text input, single/multi select, date/time input, or file upload), certain operators will be available to you. The following is a list of all available operators:

Is Equal To/Not Equal To

   This looks for a case-sensitive match/mismatch  
 

Contains/Does Not Contain

   Any portion of any word can be entered  
 

Starts With/Doesn’t Start With

   The start of any word can be entered  
 

Ends With/Doesn’t End With

   The end of any word can be entered  
 

Is Empty

   Looks to fields with no characters (a blank space entered counts as a character)  
 

Is Filled

   Looks to field with a value or character count greater than zero  
 

Before

   Looks to fields before a certain date or time  
 

After

   Looks to fields after a certain date or time  
 

Is Equal to Date/Not Equal to Date

   Looks for a match/mismatch of the specified date  
 

Is Equal to Day/Not Equal to Day

   Looks for a match/mismatch of the specified day (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc)  

 


Show a field based on another field's selection

To display a field on your form when a specific selection is made for a previous field, do the following:

  1. Click Forms in SharpSpring's left toolbar.
  2. Create or edit a form.
  3. On the Fields tab, click the Conditions Editor subtab.
  4. In the “Select Field” dropdown, choose the field that you’d like to be conditional.
  5. In the “Contains” dropdown, choose an operator.
  6. Select a Field Value from the dropdown.
  7. In the “Show” dropdown, select the field that should display when the condition is met.
  8. Click Apply Conditions.
  




Show a field based on various selections of another field

To display a field on your form when one of a variety of selections is made for a previous field, do the following:

  1. Click Forms in SharpSpring's left toolbar.
  2. Create or edit a form.
  3. On the Fields tab, click the Conditions Editor subtab.
  4. In the “Select Field” dropdown, choose the field that you’d like to be conditional.
  5. In the “Contains” dropdown, choose an operator.
  6. Select a Field Value from the dropdown.
  7. In the “Show” dropdown, select the field that should display when the condition is met.
  8. Click Add New Condition and enter the same “Select” field. Enter a new field value and “Show” field.
  9. Click Apply Conditions.
  10. Continue adding new conditions as necessary. 
  11. Once complete, click Apply Conditions.
  

 


Show multiple fields based on another field's selection

To display several fields on your form when a specific selection is made for a previous field, do the following:

  1. Click Forms in SharpSpring's left toolbar.
  2. Create or edit a form.
  3. On the Fields tab, click the Conditions Editor subtab.
  4. In the “Select Field” dropdown, choose the field that you’d like to be conditional.
  5. In the “Contains” dropdown, choose an operator.
  6. Select a Field Value from the dropdown.
  7. In the “Show” dropdown, select the field that should display when the condition is met.
  8. Click Apply Conditions.
  9. Click Add New Condition. Enter the same “Select” field, operator, and field value. Select an additional “Show” field to display. 
  10. Repeat this step as many times as necessary. 
  11. Once complete, click Apply Conditions.
